Syncplify Server!'s logical structure

Syncplify Server! implements a very flexible logical structure, which can be visually summarized with the chart below. In this diagram, each 'Admin' node (e.g., Admin #1, Admin #N, Admin #1 for Virtual Site #2, etc.) represents an administrator assigned to a specific Virtual Site. Each Virtual Site is managed independently by its own set of Admins.

Key concepts

The key concepts that anyone deploying a Syncplify Server! instance must understand are:

  • There can be multiple SuperAdmins who use the SuperAdmin UI to create one or more Virtual Sites (the number of Virtual Sites depends on your license)
  • Each Virtual Site can have one or more Administrators (or Admins)
  • Each Admin uses the Admin UI to configure the day-to-day operational settings of the specific Virtual Site they manage, including managing that site's users
  • All Virtual Sites and Admins can only be created by a SuperAdmin
  • Virtual Sites can only be managed (administered) by an Admin; SuperAdmins cannot manage Virtual Sites or their users directly
  • Users (end users) are created and managed by the Admins of each individual Virtual Site, not by SuperAdmins

Understanding the logical structure above naturally leads to the following inferences and recommendations:

  • It's good to have at least two SuperAdmin profiles assigned to different individuals, so if one loses or forgets their credentials, the other can still log into the SuperAdmin UI and reset them
  • If an Admin loses or forgets their password, a SuperAdmin can reset it or create a new Admin profile for the specific Virtual Site in question
  • Admins are responsible for managing the users of their own Virtual Site; SuperAdmins do not have access to user management within Virtual Sites
